Indoor Activities: Airway Heights Rec Center

As the Spokane temperatures take one (hopefully!) final dip before we soar into spring and summer, some go-to indoor activities are a must. Young families moving to the area are constantly asking for recommendations on indoor activities and events when the weather is too cold – or sometimes too hot – to be enjoying the outdoors.

The Rec Center

If you follow us on social media this will come as no surprise, but we recently discovered the Airway Heights Recreation Center and We. ARE. SMITTEN! For parents of younger children, this is a great option for some quality family time and solo parent time all in one location, with onsite childcare, a gymnasium, a fitness floor and an aquatics center. Check out Desi’s reel from her own family visit here!

Located in Airway Heights close to Northern Quest Casino, the Rec Center is a short drive from downtown Spokane. They offer annual, semi-annual and monthly memberships for individuals and families, but for those of us that are looking for a little less commitment, they also offer 10-visit packages and a daily drop-in rate. The drop-in rates are a great deal at just $6.20 for kids and $8.68 for adults.

The Caterpillar Room

The Center offers onsite childcare for kids 18 months to 7 years old with either an active membership or purchase of a day pass. Hourly rates are reasonable, and kids can enjoy variety of games and activities with the wonderful Caterpillar Room staff while their guardians
are onsite using the facility. Great opportunity for mom and dad to get a quick workout in before
moving on to family activities!

Gymnasium + Fitness Floor

The 6,100 square foot gymnasium is equipped with six basketball hoops and offers a combination of open gym time in addition to scheduled activities like drop-in basketball, volleyball and pickleball. You can find the full schedule here!

The state-of-the-art fitness floor offers something for all fitness levels, with a cardio space, extensive weight room, cross training equipment, indoor turf and much more. In an open space on the upper level of the Center, you can easily peek down to the Caterpillar Room to check on your little ones, or just throw your tunes on to get a focused, kid-free workout in.

The Aquatics Center

While we love the rest of the amenities the Center has to offer, the Aquatics Center is where you really strike gold. Featuring a six-lane lap pool, warm water therapy pool, hot tub, sauna, lazy river and children’s spray and play, you can easily spend hours here hanging out and playing as a family. The kids especially love the spray and play structure and lazy river, although both have limited hours of operation so be sure to check before heading out there. Current spray and play hours are:

 Monday – Thursday: 12:00PM-3:00PM & 6:30PM-8:30PM
 Friday: 12:00PM-3:00PM & 4:30PM-8:00PM
 Saturday – Sunday: 12:00PM-3:00PM & 4:00PM-6:00PM

Whether it’s the dead of winter and you’re looking for an alternative to the trampoline park scene, or it’s a blistering 105 degrees out and you just need a break from the summer heat, the Airway Heights Rec Center offers a great option for some indoor activity!
